Local Plan Survey - Spring 2026

Labour-run North East Derbyshire District Council is currently preparing a new Local Plan, which will decide where housing and development takes place across our area over the next 15–20 years.

This has been driven by the Labour Government’s decision to significantly increase housing targets — meaning the District is now expected to plan for around 12,000 new homes. As a result, the Council is consulting on:

  • The overall strategy for where development should go (towns vs villages etc), and
  • A refined list of potential development sites, including a number of sites in the green belt and on green fields

This is an important stage in the process, and local residents can still influence what happens next.

This short survey is designed to help you share your views. With your consent, we will submit your responses, along with your name and address, to North East Derbyshire District Council so they can be considered as part of the current consultation.

⚠️ Important: We strongly encourage you to also submit your views directly to the District Council to ensure your comments are fully taken into account. You can find out more and complete the Council's online consultation here:

  • Your details
To what extent do you agree with the Labour Government’s 164% increase to North East Derbyshire's housing targets, while nearby cities like Sheffield and Derby have seen theirs reduced by around 20–25%?
To what extent do you agree with us that the District Council should push for a lower housing target (around 330 homes per year), which better reflects local population growth, infrastructure capacity and environmental constraints?
To what extent do you agree with the District Council's proposed approach to prioritising development in different areas?

The Local Plan proposes prioritising development in the following order:

1. Main towns / edges of Sheffield & Chesterfield / new settlements,

2. Larger villages,

3. Smaller villages,

4. Very small villages / hamlets.

Are you happy for us to share your above responses only (along with your name and address) with North East Derbyshire District Council so they can be considered as part of the Local Plan consultation?
Only your answers to the above questions (together with your name and address) will be shared with the District Council. None of your answers to the remaining following questions will be shared.
